Sound Healing with Tibetan Singing Bowls

Sound Healing with Tibetan Singing Bowls

“If we accept that sound is vibration and we know that vibration touches every part of our physical being, then we understand that sound is heard not only through our ears but through every cell in our bodies. One reason sound heals on a physical level is because it so deeply touches and transforms us on the emotional and spiritual planes. Sound can readdress imbalances on every level of physiologic functioning and can play a positive role in the treatment of virtually any medical disorder.”

Dr Mitchell Gaynor, director of Medical Oncology and Integrative Medicine, the Cornell Cancer Prevention Centre, New York.

Sound therapy is one of the oldest and most natural forms of healing. The sound, when combined with intention in the form of mantras, chanting, prayer request or affirmation, can greatly increase the vibrations and thus affect the healing. This is what we do when we give a theme to a meditation or when we ask clients to set an intention for themselves at the beginning of a session.

It is said that sound healing is based on over 3000 years of Indian medicine. According to ancient Eastern teachings, the universe and humankind were created from sound (known as Om or Aum, the sound of the universe or the sound of creation), therefore man is sound. When a sick man is nourished by the right kind of sounds, the cells in his body start to vibrate and re-organise themselves according to their divine blueprint.

The most basic element of the human being is the cell. The simplest way of communicating with the cells are through vibration. External vibrations cause a sympathetic resonance in the cells. When tapping a singing bowl placed on the body, which consists of more than 65% water, the sound transmitted causes the cells to resonate. The sound waves spread, (much like the concentric ripples from a stone dropped in a pond), into larger and larger circles through flesh, blood, organs and even bones, relaxing them and, at the same time, harmonising and energising them. Any sound affects the nervous system, which in turn affects every cell in the body. The bowls’ vibrations are powerful enough to travel deep into the body to penetrate the bones. Vibrations can travel into places you could never touch with your hands, to effect a healing that would be very difficult to recreate otherwise.

Bowl on Head

Nowadays, Tibetan singing bowls are an ancient technology used for stimulating brainwaves. Just like the new technologies of brainwave entrainment, binaural beats and isotonic tones, Tibetan singing bowls create a ripple of sound that synchronises our brain. The sounds that are created become energy medicine that promotes healing, initiated through entraining our brainwaves to synchronise with the resonance of the bowls. The unique tones from every sound creates a perfect state for deep meditation, creative thinking and intuitive messages. The upper end of the theta brainwave range is of great importance to healing the body, mind and spirit. At 7-8 (hertz) cycles per second, our deeper intelligence, creativity and self-healing mechanisms of the body are activated. Interestingly, the earth’s frequency is 7.83Hz, the same as our brain when in a theta phase.

Since all matter is energy vibrating at different rates, i.e. your physical body, by altering the rate of vibration we can change the structure of matter. Sound from Tibetan singing bowls entrains the brain to move into the theta brain wave frequencies that induce deep meditative and peaceful states, clarity of mind and intuition. The sound vibrations impact our nervous system, engaging our relaxation reflex and hindering the stress or pain response. Their sound synchronises brain waves and enhances awareness of the mind-body connection.

All parts of your body vibrate at different frequencies. When an organ, or another part of the body, is vibrating “out of tune” or non-harmoniously, it is labelled “dis-ease”. It is characterised by an interference to the flow of energy in the body. When energy flow is interrupted, the organ or tissue in question stops vibrating at a healthy frequency. The sound frequencies created by the Tibetan singing bowls restore and optimise the flow of energy in parts of the body where this is required. A body is in a healthy state when each cell and each organ resonates in harmony with the whole being.

Through sound healing, we create a range of sounds that restore the normal vibratory frequencies of dis-eased and out-of-harmony parts of the body and mind, and can measurably improve and heal human immune function, lower heart rate and blood pressure, soothe pain in cancer patients, ease depression, drastically reduce stress levels, decrease physical pains and release emotions. Sound healing with Tibetan singing bowls is a regenerative process united to a spiritual awakening that can have profound consequences on illness, disease and all aspects of our lives.

Healing with Tibetan Singing bowls can be done directly on a person (sound massage), around a person (sound therapy), or in a group meditation (sound bath). Many people report that in addition to pain relief, they come off their emotional rollercoaster and feel a deeper sense of happiness, harmony and wellbeing. They also sometimes call it a massage with vibrations.
